Coaches cannot referee says Dr. Maiya

Dr. Maiya Gunasekera, the President Rugby Interim Committee said that they have work according to the Sports Law, Constitution and SLRFU code of conduct.

When payments are made for referees and in all other matters we have to adhere to these rules. Somebody misunderstood this and went to courts.

Kiran Atapattu, Secretary of the SLRFU said that 30 referees are now registered with the SLRFU. We decided to pay them reasonable amounts to these referees. Nobody is bigger than the game.

Dr. Maiya Gunasekera added coaches are not permitted to officiate as referees under the Sports Law.

The rugby union appointed a two member committee (Vipula Dharmadasa and Roshan Deen) to grade the Rugby Referees and assign them for matches.

Lasitha Gunarathna, the CEO of Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union also spoke.

Kelani Cables PLC came forward to sponsor the referees for the Clifford Cup tournament.
