Notice of interim injunction on UNP Leader, General Secretary

Colombo District Judge Sampath Wijeratne yesterday issued a notice of interim injunction on United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and its General Secretary Tissa Attanayake in connection with a plaint filed by a Harispattuwa Provincial Councillor challenging that the UNP had no right to suspend his party membership.

The Court issued the notice after Provincial Councillor Saman Wijesekara filed the plaint citing Wickremesinghe, Attanayake and 94 others including members of the Disciplinary Committee as the respondents.

Wijesekara filing the plaint through Attorney Sanjey Fonseka stated that he contested under the UNP banner and later decided to support the Government to solve the problems in the country. But he remained to be a member of the UNP.

The plaintiff stated that Attanayake informed him by means of a letter that a disciplinary inquiry would be held against him as he had violated provisions of the Party Constitution.

Wijesekara stated that he came to know later that the UNP was taking measures to suspend his party membership.

He stated that it was illegal to suspend his party membership without giving him an opportunity to be heard.

The notice is returnable on August 12.
