Labour officers’ examination

A competitive examination for the recruitment of a batch of 20 Labour Officers to the Labour Department will be held in Colombo in November exclusively in the Tamil medium. Those recruited will be required to serve in labour offices in the North and East and Nuwara Eliya, Hatton, Badulla, Haputale, Gampola, Nawalapitiya, Kandy South, Matugama, Matale, Kegalle, Avissawella, Ratnapura and Pelmadulla areas continuously for ten years without seeking transfers.

The closing date of applications for the examination is August 31. All particulars relating to the examination was published in the July 31 gazette.


Illicit beef seized

Kandy Police raided a house at Katukelle on Sunday and arrested four persons and seized 57 kilos of beef being illicitly packeted for sale.

During the Esala Perahera period, beef stalls are closed in Kandy city and police personnel providing security in the city are in a quandary as to how this stock of beef entered into the city from elsewhere.

Anti-Crime Unit of Kandy Division is continuing further investigations.


Offenders nabbed

Ninety three offenders were arrested by police during a search operation conducted in the Polonnaruwa district on Monday between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. with the participation of 160 personnel, said Polonnaruwa SSP N. Pathmadeva.

Among them 6 were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor, four for having ganja in their possession, eight for selling liquor without a permit, three for sexual offences and 63 for other traffic offences. Those involved in traffic offences were produced in Court and fined. Others were due to be produced in the Polonnaruwa and Hingurakgoda Magistrate’s Courts yesterday.


Indian Independence celebrations

The Indian Cultural Centre presents Samarpan - glimpses of Kathak dance form by Renowned artistes Hari and Chethana and their ensemble from India to celebrate the 62nd Anniversary of India’s Independence Renowned artistes Hari and Chethana and their dance ensemble from India will perform at the Kularathne Hall, Ananda College, Colombo on August 15, Saturday at 6.30 p.m.

The program will also include performances in Kandy at E.O.E. Perera Theatre, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya on August 16, Sunday at 5.30 p.m. and in Nuwara Eliya on August 17, Monday at the Nuwara Eliya Town Hall at 5.30 p.m. as well as a lecture cum demonstration at the Indian Cultural Centre on August 20, Thursday at 6.00 p.m.

EU gives Euro 62 m for emergency rehabilitation

With reference to our news item with the above title which appeared on this page in our issue of yesterday, European Parliament Development Committee Vice - Chairman Niranjan Deva Aditya has informed us that the European Union grants are not given to the Government of Sri Lanka but are channelled through NGOs and INGOs including United Nation's organizations, the International Committee of the Red Cross and others.


Parents die in quest to save their son

N.G. Nandoris (58) of Mattegama Kandy and his wife W.G. Kusumawathie (54) died on the spot after being run over by a moving train at Alawwa recently. Alawwa police conducting investigations said the couple was on their way back after lodging a complaint against a woman, a resident in Nawatalwatta, Alawwa who had allegedly been in love with their son who is already a married person.


Fatal accidents in Panadura rise

Fatal accidents in the Panadura Police Division has increased during the last several months, sources said. About 10 fatal deaths had taken place in Panadura, Horana, Wadduwa and Bandaragama Police areas.

Most fatal accidents are due to negligence and recklessness of drivers.


Death of President Aquino:

Condolence book at Embassy

A Book of Condolence will be kept open for the public at the Consulate General of the Philippines at No. 41, Sir Ernest De Silva Mawatha, Colombo 07 from August 3 to 7 from 1.30 to 4.30 pm for the late Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino, who died on August 1.


Krishnamurthi talk

A recorded public talk on “What is meditation?” delivered by the late Indian sage J. Krishnamurti will be replayed at Anula Nursery School Hall, 310, High Level Road, Colombo 6 on Sunday, August 9.


Gammadu festival

The annual Gammadu festival of Goddess Pattini Devalaya, Galgamuwa, Alawwa will be held on September 8 at the devala premises.


Prof. Ratnapala memorial oration

The second Prof. Nandasena Ratnapala memorial oration will be delivered by Jaffna University Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Shanmugalingam on Monday, August 10, at the BMICH Committee Room C at 5 p.m. The lecture is titled ‘Living in Research with Prof. Nandasena Ratnapala’.

A religious ceremony will be held at Ananda College Budu-medura tomorrow at 7 a.m. to invoke blessings of the Triple Gem on Old Anandians who received promotions in their ranks for their gallantry in the war against terrorism.

Barath Night program

Al-Masjidul Badriyeen, Nawala Jumma Mosque, Rajagiriya, will conduct Barath Night program tomorrow at the mosque after Mahrib prayers.

‘Yaseen Sura’ will be recited by Al Haj Mowlavie M. Mafaz with a special Dhuwa. And after Isha prayers Mowlavie Al Haj M. B. M. Mubarak will deliver a special religious lecture regarding the significance of ‘Barath Night’.


Death of Devalaya Trustee

The Chief Trustee of the Kabulumulla Rajamaha Paththini Devalaya, Yatiyantota, Abaya Ranasinghe Mudiyansege Tikiri Banda passed away at the age of 84.

He was a popular social worker, a former village headman and also a Grama Seva Niladari in the area.

Funeral takes place today, August 5 at 3 pm at the family burial grounds. His remains are now lying at his residence.
