Six more records tumble at National Youth Games

The 21st National Youth Sports Festival saw a fair amount of records falling here at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla yesterday.

The meet which has introduced for young sportsmen and women to enter the National Sports arena over the years, will mark the end of its 21st version today, with a colourful closing ceremony which is scheduled for this evening followed by a grand musical show which features a famous band in Sri Lanka along with popular artists.

The dancers of National Youth Services council will also perform at the stage, said Chairman National Youth Services Council Bhashwara Senanka Gunarathna.

Six more meet records fell yesterday while the previous record for the Over - 20 men’s high jump was equalled by Amitha Kasun who represented Anuradhapura District when he cleared 2.03m.

Each player who set new meet records will be awarded a cash award of Rs. 10,000 while the organizers have promised to present a Rs. 100,000 award for athletes who set new Sri Lanka records but so far no one has succeeded in achieving this feet. At the end of the second day, Ratnapura District led the points table followed by the Kurunegala District. Puttlam district stood in the third slot.

New meet records:

U-20 women’s Javelin throw: H.P.D.H. Maduwanthi (Moneragala District) 38.80m (Previous record - G.H.K.N. Kumari - Matale District -32.85m)

U-20 men’s 4X100m: Puttlam District 44.1 secs. (Previous record - Ratnapura District 45.2 secs.)

U-20 women’s 4X100m: Anuradhapura District 52.9secs. (Previous Record - 53.4secs. Kurunegala District)

U-20 men’s Long Jump: W.D.M.M. Sampath (Kurunegala District) 6.92m (Previous Record - A. Sandaruwan - Anuradhapura District 6.61m)

U-20 men’s 10000m: S. Selvakumar (Nuwara Eliya District) 34min. 17.7secs.

(Previous Record - N. Selvakumara - Nuwara Eliya District - 34min.45.9secs.)

U-20 women’s shot putt: W.M.S.K. Weerasekera (Polonnaruwa District) 11.66m (Previous Record - S.N. Manchanayake - Ratnapura District - 11.51m) Record Equalled -

Over - 20 men’s High Jump: Amitha Kasun (Anuradhapura District) 2.03m (H.W. Suresh Kumara - Gampaha)
