Sketches of Movement
Susantha Welgama, one of the live-wires of the Welgama Group, author
who has written about his experiences in Germany, is planning to hold an
exhibition of sketches about how the transport system in Sri Lanka has
evolved over the years. "I am finishing my sketches that will be
displayed soon pertaining to the different type of vehicles and how they
were modified to suit the modern-day needs," he said.

In the olden days, Welgama reminisced that when they publicized the
cinematography or bi-scope films, they used to put up a hoarding on a
bullock cart where a music band played inside to attract people. "It was
a funny sight to see because of the mayhem it made when the movie
maddening bullock cart came to town" he said. "The most delicate item we
transported was a grand piano from the Alliance de Francaise to the
BMICH for a concert where we used a 60 tonnes capacity Pimeover
trailer"said Welgama. In addition to this, there are some memorable
vehicle masterpieces is a Tulip 33, a two-seater vehicle. "The first
vehicle was a three-wheeler built in 1886 produced by Carl Benz," he
said.
The vehicle industry has evolved over the years bringing latest
technological innovations and new high technological modifications.
"I'm also sketching a state-of-the-art Mercedes Benz to add to the
stunning range revealing that there is an extra mile to go with regard
to our transport system," said Welgama. - ND |
