Galle Municipal Council Opposition Leader Dushantha Seneviratne who was shot dead on Wednesday was an accused in two murder cases.

Police Spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said D. Seneviratne was accused in two murder cases in Galle. "He was acquitted in one case on July 17 by Galle Magistrate Geethani Wijesinghe and the other case is pending," he added.

"We suspect that one of the victim's party might have assassinated the Galle MC Opposition Leader," the SSP said.

Two special police teams were deployed to conduct the investigations.

Seneviratne was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Beligaha junction when he was getting into his car on Wednesday morning.

The assassins fled the area on a motorcycle.
