Nethadara 2009, the annual nature photography exhibition and competition oraganized by the Nature team of the University of Moratuwa will be held at the National Art Gallery from July 24 to 25.

More than 130 selected photographs covering busy towns, rural villages, thick forests, mountain ranges and waterfalls will be exhibited. What the Nature team wants to emphasize is that it doesn’t matter where you live to experience the beauty of nature.

With the introduction of the digital camera, photography has become a popular phenomena than ever before in our society. The nature team has realized the ability of photography to influence the society in the worthy cause of preserving the environment.

The team was formed in 2004 as a group of environmental enthusiastic undergraduate. The team has become the official organization of nature studies and environmental issues of the University of Moratuwa.

Apart from its activities of tree planting, tree tagging, waste management, field visits and nature awareness lectures, Nethadara 2009 is their prime annual event of the forum.

With the theme ‘Rhythms of the colour of nature’, this year’s competition is being held under six categories.

Schoolchildren, university undergraduates and members of environmental societies took part in the competition and the winners were awarded with cash prizes and certificates.

The Nature team believes the exhibition will create enthusiasm and promote the beauty and excitement among young minds on the art of nature photography. They hope that the exhibition will create a belief among the community that even the most urbanized places can accommodate magnificent fraction of the nature.

When people see the beauty of the surroundings they will be much more concerned about protecting the environment.

It is a need of the hour for everybody to give their fullest support to protect Mother Nature. Human activities have caused great damages to the natural habitat. Individually, we can contribute greatly to protect and preserve the nature by getting a more natural lifestyle.

Nethadara 2009 will lead to a discussion among the community to rethink how beautiful and precious the environment we live in and the importance of conserving it our future generations.

Let’s get together and work to protect Mother Nature, if not the beautiful moments of Mother Nature we captured today will only be seen in the photographs in the future!
