Three persons were also injured. Police spokesman SSP Ranjith
Gunasekera said at least 110 houses and a hospital were damaged when
strong winds lashed through Ambanpola and Kukulawa areas around 12.50
am.
“Water and power supplies were interrupted. The strong wind also
damaged the main power supply line and the water supply after
transmission lines were damaged by the strong wind,” SSP Gunasekera
said.
Strong winds similar to a tornado are experienced during the
Southwest monsoon in Sri Lanka. “The wind is quite strong during the
Southwest monsoon. Combination of thunder cloud and strong Southwest
monsoon winds generate a tornado condition for a short period,”
Meteorology Department Director S.H. Kariyawasam told the Daily News.
He noted that the Southwest monsoon and accompanying strong winds may
cause the tornado condition to prevail.
