Only qualified technicians for railways

Transport Minister Dallas Alahapperuma has decided to regularise the recruitment procedure of permanent technicians to the Sri Lanka Railways.

This follows a discussion the Minister had with a delegation of the Sri Lanka Railways Technicians Union, said a communique issued by the Transport Ministry yesterday.

Only candidates who satisfied the required educational qualifications and completed a full time three year training course in a recognised technical institute will be recruited as technicians after a written test conducted by the Railway Department, the release said.

The Sri Lanka Railway Technicians Union has agitated for the regularisation of the recruitment procedure sine 1994.

Delegates who attended the conference thanked the Minister for heeding their request.
