General Sarath Fonseka yesterday assumed duties as the new Chief of Defence Staff which has been made a powerful position in the Defence hierarchy with the Chief of Defence Staff Act passed on Parliament recently. Here, General Fonseka assumes duties after signing a document at the auspicious hour at the Joint Operations Headquarters. Outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera, Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunatilleka, Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickremaratne, newly appointed Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thissara Samarasinghe and Army Commander Lt. New Army Commander assumes duties

Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya who assumed duties as the 19th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army yesterday vowed to transform the Army to a highly trained, well disciplined organisation to fulfill the present and future requirement of the country following the foot steps of his predecessor General Sarath Fonseka.
