The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) set up a transformer in the
Kilinochchi town near the Iranamadu dam on Friday.
With it the CEB expects to supply electricity to the entire
Kilinochchi town within the next two weeks. At present the CEB has
expanded its grid supply from Vavuniya to Mankulam covering 50
kilometres.
The initial construction work with an investment of Rs. 600 million
has commenced. It covers a 30 kilometre distance from Mankulam to
Kilinochchi and a 40 kilometre distance from Kilinochchi to Mullaitivu.
Construction work is due to be completed within 180 days, under the
Uthuru Vasanthaya Development Program.
In addition, the Government has allocated Rs. 6,000 million to
increase the grid supply to the districts of Jaffna, Mannar, Kilinochchi,
Mullaitivu and Vavuniya.
The CEB has planned to provide electricity for 400 villages by
setting up another 400 transformers under this project. Through these
programs the CEB will be in a position to supply electricity to the
entire Northern Province within three years. |
