Program to eradicate dengue
Ratnapura group corr.
Steps have been taken to eradicate mosquito breeding grounds in the
Nivitigala town by the 8th battalion, National Cadet corps and the
Nivitigala Pradeshiya Sabha. The program is implemented under the Rural
Development Minister, Premalal Jayasekera.
The program include an awareness program among the people.
Heavy rains in Nuwara Eliya

With the dawn of the south west monsoon in the Nuwara Eliya district
heavy rains and gales have caused havoc for the past three days, with
most of the giant reservoirs rising.
In several places there were major earth slips, particularly in the
Dunscinane, Pundaluoya roads, and around the townships. Several huts in
the slum areas have been destroyed due to heavy blowings and trees
falling on them.
Work in the plantations have got disrupted due to heavy rains and in
the low lying areas, vegetations and potato cultivators have lost
heavily in their crops.
Annual convention
The annual convention of the Agriculture Research and Production
Assistant Union will be held on July 11 at Temple Trees under the
patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa with Ministers Maithripala
Sirisena, Dinesh Gunawardena, Bandula Gunawardhana, Dullas Alhapperuma
and Athauda Seneviratne, Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana and
Director General Trade Union Affairs Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra
participating as invitees, a union press release said.
A day’s salary of members will be handed over to the National Defence
Fund while books will be donated to IDP children in the north.
Islamic lectures
Scholar Ash Sheikh Mufti Yoosuf (Binnoori) will deliver a talk on
prophet Nikah Sermon in today’s context on July 6, 2009 at 10.30 a.m. at
the Nimal Road Jummah Masjid in Bambalapitiya.
These lectures will continue every Poya day in English by Islamic
scholars catering to English speaking Muslims under the guidance of
Darul Uloomil Islamiyya.
Pooja for People’s Bank anniversary
A special pooja to mark the 48th anniversary of People’s Bank will be
held today at 5 p.m. at the Sri Badra Kali Amman Kovil, Trincomalee.
Opening of maternity ward
The new maternity ward complex of the Elpitiya Base Hospital complete
with modern facilities will be opened on July 17, 2009. The project
costing Rs. 45 million is funded by a foreign NGO.
AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the Olcott Memorial Sports Foundation
will be held today at 3.00 p.m. at the Bloomfield Sports Pavilion, Ried
Avenue, Colombo 7.
Poly clinic
The Sri Lanka Cancer Society will hold their next Poly Clinic on July
12 (Sunday) from 8.30 am to 11.00 am at 37/25, Bullers Lane, Colombo 7
to screen patients for cancer.
Paps Smears testing and Dental and General Clinic activities will
also be conducted. The services are free of charge.
Workshop
A workshop on Information and Communication Technology Law organised
by the Colombo Law Society will be held on July 2009 from 9.00 a.m. to 4
p.m. at the Commercial High Court of Colombo.
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Justice J.A.N. De Silva PC will
deliver the keynote address.
Several Judges, Lawyers, Students and members of the Public and
private sector will participate.
Dayawathie needs help
Consultant Orthopaedic Dr. Upali Banagala has recommended Dayawathie
of No. 42, Pethiyagoda, Veyangoda, who is suffering from osteo-arthritis
immediate surgery to graft a hip-bone as she is in imminent danger of
losing her ability of walking.
She is the mother of two children. Her husband being a cultivator is
not in a position to afford the operation, which will cost over Rs.
300,000.
They are seeking public assistance to raise this amount. Those
interested in assisting this worthy and meritorious cause could send

New Auditorium

An auditorium will be constructed for the benefit of the People of
Dodangoda divisional secretariat division said the Chairman K.K. Jagath
Keerthi Perera. A land has already been set apart. The estimate cost is
ninety lakhs.
