Unnecessary losses due to negotiations - Brig Rohana Bandara

A large number of security forces' lives were unnecessarily lost during the past 30 years because certain past leaders tried to resolve the terrorist problem through negotiations trying out various experiments under international pressure without taking the terrorists head on said Brig. Rohana Bandara, Commander of the 57th division.

A ceremony organised by the Kandy Vidyartha Vidyalaya OBA to pay tribute to members of the Security Forces and Police who are past pupils of the school was held at the school premises recently. He was addressing a Ranaviru Upahara ceremony held at the Vidyartha Vidyalaya Kandy to pay tribute to past pupils of the school who played an active role in defeating terrorists during the northern humanitarian operations.

Livestock Development Minister C. B. Ratnayake, a past pupil of the school presided.

Brig. Rohana Bandara said the heroic forces under the able guidance of the commander-in-chief President Mahinda Rajapaksa was able to totally liberate the country from terrorism through their gallantry and dedicated efforts.

He said the LTTE was able to nurture itself into a formidable outfit because past governments lacked a concrete policy and objective to defeat terrorism.

The incompetence and lack of knowledge of certain past leaders in tackling terrorism properly was proved by the massive arms hauls unearthed by the forces during search operations.

Minister C. B. Ratnayake, DIG Keerthi Gajanayake, Kandy Mayor and Vidyartha OBA President L. B. Aluvihare, Principal P. A. S. Alwis and several others also spoke.

Twenty two past pupils of Vidyartha who are members of the Security Forces and Police were honoured and presented with mementos at this ceremony.

Among them were Brig. Rohana Bandara, DIG Gajanayake, SSP Ravi Seneviratne, Lt. Col. Dhammika Jayasundare, Wing Commander P. B. Ekanayake and Lt. Commdr. Manjula Dissanayake.
