FACETS Sri Lanka 2009
FACETS SRI LANKA 2009 will offer new opportunities for the local gem
and jewellery industry at Sri Lanka's international gem and jewellery
exhibition.
This year's FACETS SRI LANKA 2009 will serve as a platform for
leading gemstone traders in emerging economies such as Russia, India and
China to start sourcing from Sri Lanka, as well as to explore market
opportunities in Hong Kong, Burma and Iraq as they arrive in
anticipation of sealing trade links with the Sri Lanka industry.

This year's FACETS exhibition offers the local industry an
opportunity to venture into newer markets such as Russia, China and Iraq
in addition to the traditional gem buying countries such as US, Hong
Kong and Europe," Chairman of the FACETS Organising Committee Chanaka
Ellawala said.
Russia and China have emerged as strong contenders in the global gem
and jewellery industry despite a global recession and its related
setbacks.
Russia is the fourth largest world gold producer and practically the
monopolist in platinum and palladium extraction.
Russia's newly rich bourgeoisie have fuelled the jewellery markets
and created a trend of their own in Russia. Russians spend about $2
billion on jewelry annually. In 2003, Russia used 96 tons of gold for
jewelry production, which is 15 tons more than former Soviet Union used
for those purpose.
In 2004 the rate of production growth was 27 per cent and according
to the experts' data, total volume of jewelry sales on the Russian
market now exceeds $1.5 billion. Myanmar and Thailand will showcase
their products at the international booths at the 19th FACETS SRI LANKA
exhibition and Indian, Burmese, Chinese and other regional delegations
also will arrive for the event.
"We are confident that all the booth holders at this year's FACETS
SRI LANKA exhibition will benefit from the visits of these delegations,
and the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA) are making
arrangements to facilitate this process," Ellawala said.
FACETS SRI LANKA 2009 will be held at BMICH on September 3-6. The
event is organised by the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association and is
sponsored by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority. The Sri Lanka
Export Development Board is also a co-organizer and sponsor.
Three major industry sectors that include the gems, jewellery, and
lapidary will participate at this year's exhibition. Machinery,
equipment and tools manufacturers, importers and distributors are also
slated to participate. Service providers such as laboratories,
Educational Institutions, freight forwarders, security and surveillance
providers will also be represented.
"Last year's success has encouraged us to go that extra mile this
year in making FACETS SRI LANKA 2009; the most looked forward to
industry event in Sri Lanka," said Secretary of the Sri Lanka Gem and
Jewellery Association Ziqufi Ismail.

Murali renews partnership with Ceylinco Life
Cricketing icon Muttiah Muralitharan will take the field for Ceylinco
Life for another year as Brand Ambassador the company said.
The renewal of his contract will see test and one-day cricket’s most
prolific wicket taker actively supporting Ceylinco Life’s efforts to
increase awareness of the value of life insurance for a third successive
year. The spin-wizard will also spearhead a new community initiative of
Ceylinco Life by leading a team of bowlers on spin coaching camps for
school cricketers in the North and the East, the company said.
“Murali’s commitment has been assets in our marketing efforts, and we
are now providing a platform for him to pass on some of his knowledge
and skill to a new generation of cricketers,” Ceylinco Life Deputy
Chairman R. Renganathan said. He said plans are being drawn up to
conduct the first spin coaching camp in Trincomalee in August.
Muralitharan would be supported by two or three other spin bowlers at
this one-day camp.
Muralitharan will also continue to be one of the elements of the
company’s multi-faceted communications campaigns aimed at generating
greater consciousness among Sri Lankans that life insurance is an
essential safety net against an uncertain future.
In 2008, Muralitharan supported two distinct projects of Ceylinco
Life as the company’s Brand Ambassador. The first was a nationwide
recruitment campaign that sought to improve general perceptions about
insurance and the second was the Ceylinco Life ‘Family Savari’ mega
promotion. “Murali’s appeal transcends age, geographical, racial, social
and gender boundaries,” Renganathan said.
