AU meets on African political situation
Debates economic growth and development:
Libya: Heads of State and other personalities of the African
Union (AU) met in Libya at the 13th Summit focused on analyzing the
current regional political situation and agricultural investments.
Representatives from 53 nations of the continent along with
executives of regional and international organizations gathered together
at the Sirte Convention Center to debate challenges to economic growth
and development.
Libyan leader Muammar Al-Gaddafi who is the current AU President,
leads the sessions after he has recently received several colleagues,
among them Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe), Frederique De Menezes (Sao Tome and
Prince), and Mwai Kibaki (Kenya). The meeting is also attended by Ahmed
Abdullah Sambi (Comores Islands), Amadou Toumani Toure (Mali), Gabon
acting prime minister and parliament leader Rymondo Pereira and others.
Food security is a priority on the agenda of the meeting that will
also tackle strengthening the role of the AU, particularly with regard
to preventing, directing and solving electoral disputes and violent
conflicts in African countries, such as Madagascar, Sudan and
Mauritania. Founded as the African Union Organization in 1963 and
christened AU in 2002 the forum seeks to promote and preserve stability
and peace, boost political reform strategies, reduce poverty and promote
