Cambrians' - Science clash in big match
Moratuwa Sports Correspondent
Prince of Wales' College, Moratuwa after three decades is now a force
to reckon with in school Rugby. Full credit goes to M.E.C. Fernando, a
distinguished old Cambrian and as Principal he took the bold decision to
introduce rugby to Moratuwa and upto now no other Moratuwa school plays
Rugby.
When Rugger was introduced to Prince of Wales College the then coach
of Science College, Mt. Lavinia redily agreed to help. In addition the
senior players of that college gave their utmost assistance. The past
and the present Cambrian Ruggerites must salute Mr. Fernando, coach of
Science College and the Science College outfit.
At Present Cambrians have gone strength to strength and have gained
some stunning victories against some leading rugger playing schools.
The present Principal Rohana Karunarathne, an ardent sports fan is of
the opinion that the time is ripe to organize a Big Match. It is fitting
tribute to get the nod of Science College, Mount Lavinia for this
fixture. This annual encounter would be played for M.E.C. Fernando
Challenge Trophy.
The two schools have agreed to play the Big Match at a neutral venue
and the venue chosen is none other than Havelock Park. It is a great
coincidence that Fernando is coming as the Chief Guest.
The General Secretary of Prince of Wales College Old Boys Association
Dilwin Mendis has requested all past Cambrians to get to Havelock Park
on 3rd July 2009 at 4 p.m. to witness this historic inaugural match.
