Azar Central 'B' victorious

It turned out to be an home and home final when Azar Central College 'B' team turned the heat on their 'A' team by defeating them 23-16 in the finals to become champions of the Kandy schools boys basketball championship organised by the Kandy District Basketball Association and worked off at the basketball courts of Azar Central College in Akurana. At half time Azar Central College 'B' led 12-9.

Azar Central College who have improved by leaps and bounds at basketball over the past few years performed well when both their teams entered the finals beating the leading schools in the Kandy District. This augurs well for the future of this sports.

When the news spread that the finals will be played between the two teams of Azar Central College a very large crowd turned up to witness the final. Azar College 'B' after a tense battle emerged victors thanks to some constructive play by skipper M. N. M. Shafran and the aggressive play of S. M. Shafath who collected 10 points.

S. M. Shafath was also adjudged the Best player of the tournament. In the semi finals Azar Central College 'B' created a major upset when they beat one of the favourites and the more fancied Trinity College, Kandy 20-16 after a tough contest with the Kandy school putting up a guilty display before going down.

The second semi final too turned out to be a closely contested battle before Azar Central College 'A' edged out Colombo International School 'A' 17-12. M. R. M. Rimza collected 9 points for Azar Central College 'A'.
