Forces’ images barred from polls campaign

*Forces’ images in cutouts, posters or in print or electronic media prohibited without Defence Ministry approval

*Ex-service personnel can obtain permission to use images from Defence Secretary

Political parties and candidates contesting the upcoming elections are prohibited from misusing Security Forces’ victories over terrorism in the election campaign.

Media Centre for National Security Director Lakshman Hulugalla said the Government has completely prohibited the use of Forces’ images in cutouts, posters or in print or electronic media without Defence Ministry approval.

Hulugalla said the Government has received information that certain elements who have never participated or supported its mission against terrorism are attempting to make use of the war heroes’ tag to win the election.

He said this type of action would tarnish the image of Security Forces who made the supreme sacrifice on behalf of the nation during the past three decades.

Ex-service personnel contesting the elections can obtain permission to use such images from the Defence Secretary, he said.
