BOI projects for cement and fertilizer
The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka granted investment approval to
Sterling Investments and Development Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. and D M L Holdings
(Pvt) Ltd. Chairman / Director General Dhammika Perera, signed the
agreements on behalf of the BOI and presented the BOI Certificate of
Registration to the investors.
The agreements signed with Sterling Investments and Development Lanka
(Pvt) Ltd. and D M L Holdings (Pvt) Ltd. will lead to manufacturing of
cement and fertilizer for export. Investment for both Sterling
Investments and Development Lanka and D M L Holdings are sponsored by UK
based AML Products. AML Products engages in trading commodities in
Eastern Europe. The two ventures will create 100 employment
opportunities initially and is expected to commence commercial
operations within two months.
The $ 5 million investment agreement with Sterling Investments and
Development Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. is for a project for grinding and bagging
of cement. The venture will establish four state-of-the-art
manufacturing plants, including Galle, Vavuniya and Colombo. The
products will be exported to Tanzania and Libya, and will also be
provided to the local market.
D M L Holdings, a project under Nipayum Sri Lanka 300 Enterprises
Program signed an agreement to manufacture fertilizer for local and
export markets. The fertilizer will be manufactured in a fully automated
state-of-the art manufacturing plant at Wennappuwa using locally
available raw material.
The company will manufacture fertilizer such as single super
phosphate, triple super phosphate, and diammonium phosphate. The
products will be provided to the local market and also exported to
countries such as Tanzania, Libya and Bangladesh.
Director David Gluck said that he was happy with the service provided
by the Board of Investment and looked forward to having good relations
with Sri Lanka.

Ministry applauds student champ:
First Lankan winner at Intel ISEF 2009 felicitated
The first local student E. Chandula Padmasiri, to win a Grand Award
at the recently concluded Intel International Science and Engineering
Fair (ISEF) 2009 was felicitated by the Minister of Education, Susil
Premajayantha at Isurupaya.
Chandula, one of five students who represented Sri Lanka at this
event, was adjudged third in the Electrical and Mechanical category for
his mobile phone based microscope and received US$1,000 in prize money.
Chandula was a finalist of Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) 2008
competition and won the first place at Sri Lanka Science and Engineering
Fair (SLSEF).

Minister Susil Premajayantha said, “Chandula’s achievement has not
only boosted our confidence but further strengthen our commitment to
assist our young talents for coming out with new innovations.”
Commenting on Intel’s support for improvement of ICT Education here
in Sri Lanka, Minister said, “Intel has been one of our trusted partners
in bringing the latest technology to our school system and providing our
teacher and student community with training to keep themselves abreast
with country’s development goals. I would like to extend my sincere
appreciation to Intel for their assistance extended to Sri Lankan
students to showcase their talents at such wide international arenas and
for its commitment to such causes”.

appreciated the government’s initiatives in this endeavour.

Sri Lanka to host Y’s Men Asia Area Convention
‘Sri Lanka will be the host for this year’s Y’s Men Convention which
is expected to bring in around 500 foreign delegates’, said General
Manager of Sri Lanka Convention Bureau Vipula Wanigasekera.
This international gathering of Y’s Men will be held from July
31-August 2. With the return of total peace , we will have the full
visitation from around the world; the Bureau said.
Sri Lanka’s bid to hold the event in Colombo was boosted with the
election of a Sri Lankan, Lady Y’s Man Rita Hettiarachchi to the high
office of Asia Area President for 2008/2009.
A Youth Convocation which targets youth in the age group 15 - 25
years will run concurrently to the Area Convention while the annual
meeting of International Council Members, the highest executive body of
the organization will also be held in Sri Lanka, just prior to the
Convention.
The theme for the Area Convention and Youth Convocation is “Working
Together to Serve Better”. One of the important items on the Program of
the Convention is the installation of the new International President
and Asia Area President for 2009/2010. Kevin Cummings of Canada and Dr.
Chon Byung-koo of South Korea.
Y’s Men International, headquartered in Geneva is a voluntary service
