Enjoining order further extended
Sandasen MARASINGHE
Colombo District Judge Sampath Wijeratne on Wednesday extended the
enjoining order issued on an earlier date restraining United National
Party from suspending the party membership of Deputy Fisheries Minister
Neomal Perera from the UNP. The Court extended the order till July 16.
The Court further ordered to that objections and answers be filed
before the District Court on July 16. The Court also extended the order
that restrained United National Party and its General Secretary Tissa
Attanayake from taking actions to suspend Deputy Minister Neomal Perera
from sitting in parliament by informing the Secretary General of the
Parliament based on the same suspension from the party membership of the
UNP. The Court issued the orders after Neomal Perera filed a petition
before the Court alleging that the defendants of this plaint had no
right to take a decision to suspend his party membership from the UNP as
informed to him by a letter dated May 28, 2009.
The plaintiff stated that Attanayake asked him through a letter to
show cause before June 15 not to suspend his party membership from the
UNP. The UNP alleged that it learnt Neomal Perera had accepted the post
of Sri Lanka Freedom Party organizer for Chilaw.
The Deputy Minister cited the UNP, its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe,
General Secretary Tissa Attanayake and 89 others as the defendants.
Attorney-at-Law Ali Sabri appeared for the plaintiff instructed by
Athula de Silva.
