Govt takes over garbage grounds

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday ordered officials to take over all garbage dumping grounds maintained by the Local Government institutions under Government supervision in terms of the Emergency Regulations.

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake yesterday announced that the Vavuniya Urban Council and Jaffna Municipal Council election will be held on August 8 as the period granted for the political parties and independent groups to file their nominations ended at 12 noon yesterday.

Customs officers discover :

Heroin in potato packs

Heroin in camouflage packs resembling potatoes containing two and half kilograms of the drug with a street value of Rs. 12 million was detected by the Customs when a consignment of potatoes from Pakistan was checked at the Port of Colombo, Customs Superintendent P. K. A. Dayawansa Senarath (post clearance and audit branch) told the Daily News yesterday.
