The Global Economy Prize is awarded annually to an economist, a
politician, and a businessperson who have made on outstanding
contribution to establishing a just and protective society based on
individual initiative and responsibility.
Mittal is one among this year’s award- winners. The list includes
Prof. Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia
University and Special Advisor to UN Secretary. Previous award
recipients include Dr. Amartya Sen and Dr. Helmut Schmidt.
According to a message on the Kiel institute website: “In their
distinctive ways, each of this year’s prize winners reflects the
objectives of the Kiel Institute Global Economy prize.
The Prize is meant to promote a creative voice heard in the
frequently sterile public debate on the future of the global economy. It
is neither the voice of ruthless, unconstrained market forces, nor the
voice of indiscriminate Government intervention.
Instead, in honouring the outstanding accomplishments of our prize
winners, the Kiel Institute seeks to highlight how incentive-based
market activity can promote economic efficiency and social equity.”
The Kiel Institute is an international centre for research in global
economic affairs, economic policy consulting, economic education and
documentation. The Institute engages in creating solutions to urgent
problems in global economic affairs.
On the basis of its research, the Institute advises decision-makers
