North-South students to come together

The Education Ministry has taken steps to bring together
schoolchildren in the Southern and Northern districts under the
Government’s Utura Vasanthaya development program.
Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told the media that the Uthuru
Vasanthaya program launched by the Presidential Secretariat would not
only benefit the schoolchildren in the North but also citizens of all
ages irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
The Minister has appointed a team of officials to study the current
educational activities of children in the North and setbacks they
suffered due to terrorism which prevailed for nearly three decades.
Mobile ID service in Badulla
Department of Registration of Persons will launch its second mobile
service to issue national identity cards in Badulla district from June
24 to 28 at five locations. The details of which are given below:
June 24 at the Mahiyangane Divisional Secretariat office and also at
Girandurukotte Viharasthanaya.
June 25 at Ridimaliyadda Divisional Secretariat office and Gamunupura
Gamunu Maha Vidyalaya.
June 26 at Meegahakiuwala Divisional Secretariat office and
Pitamaruwa Grama Niladhari office.
June 27 at Passara Divisional Secretariat office.
June 28 at Madolsima (for estates at Passara, Badulla and Lunugala)
Divisional Secretariat office.
These mobile services will operate from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on
each day.
Off to Maldives
Construction and Engineering Services Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne
left for Maldives yesterday on an official visit.
The Minister will hold talks with Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed
and Maldivian Ministers of construction and Sports regarding
construction and Building contracts to be undertaken by Sri Lanka in the
Maldives.
He is also due to inspect several possible construction sites in the
Islands during his stay.
Buddhist talk
Prasantha de Alwis will deliver a Public Buddhist talk in English on
Pansil and Criminal Law at a Meeting of the Servants of the Buddha
Society on June 27 Saturday at 4.30 p.m. at Maitri Hall, Lauries Road,
Bambalapitiya.
Higher ordination
The 36th higher ordination ceremony of the Amarapura Ariyawansa
Saddhamma Yuththika Nikaya will be held from June 25 to 28 at the
‘Udakukkepa Sima Malaka’ erected in the river Kaluganga.
The main forum and celebration will be held at 4.00 p.m. on June 25
at the upper Dhamma Hall of the Kalutara Bodhi Trust. Mahanayaka of
Amarapura Chapter, Most Ven. Dawuldena Gnanissara Maha Nayaka thera,
President of the Amarapura Chapter, Most Ven. Kotugoda Dhammawasa
Anunayaka Thera, Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara and guests will participate.
Birth anniversary of former President R. Premadasa
The 85th birth anniversary of the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa
falls today (23).
A commemorative function will be held opposite the Premadasa stative
at Aluthkade Colombo at 5 p.m. where Government and Opposition
Parliamentarians will participate, the Premadasa Centre stated.
Dry rations will be given to 500 underprivileged families at the
function.
Exhibition
Walawe Urumaya 2009, an exhibition featuring student educational
exhibits and trade stalls will be held from June 29 to July 4 at the
Mahaveli Grounds, Angunakolapelessa to mark the 50th anniversary of the
Chandrikavewa, Embilipitiya and granting the land rights to people of
the area.
The event is sponsored by the Construction and Engineering Services,
Irrigation and Water Management Ministries and the Walawe Heritage
Foundation.
Cultural program
Daha Ata Sanniya, a cultural dance program with educational lectures
and discussions will be presented by the dancers of the three Armed
Forces with special shows for schoolchildren at the Giriulla Town Hall
on June 26.
There will be two performances for schools at 9.30 a.m. and 12.30
p.m. the public performance at 6.30 p.m.
Awards ceremony
The awards ceremony of the six month Mass Communication Course
conducted free of charge by the Mohan Lal Grero Foundation in
Collaboration with the Lyceum International School, Nugegoda will be
held on June 27 at 9.30 a.m. at the Lyceum International School
auditorium.
Annual Sessions
The Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) will hold its annual
sessions and Annual General Meeting on June 26 at Hotel Janaki, Colombo
