Renowned dancer, dance instructor and choreographer Nilan Malgaspe
had now taken his dancing techniques to the web as www.nilandance.com
The website was launched a couple of months ago amidst friends and
well-wishers to coincide with his 25th year in the dance and arts arena.
The day also marked the 16th anniversary of Nilan’s dance school
Narthana Sevana.
Nilan’s popular dance troupe ‘Arpeggio’, which embodies the meaning
fluid movements, was comprised nearly 20 years ago. It is made up of
some of his most skilled pupils and the troupe soon gained recognition
for its unique dance forms.
As demand poured in Nilan was able to initiate the Arpeggio Dancing
Academy in 1992. With more students joining in Narthana Sevana took
shape into a fully fledged dancing school.
A product of Warakapola Gamini Maha Vidyalaya and Pasyala Madya Maha
Vidyalaya, Nilan’s innate talent for dancing was brought about by his
surroundings. Later George Malkem, an American who had resided in the
country for five years, noted his skills and taught him techniques in
Ballet, Ballroom, Jive, Rap, Disco, Cha Cha and other forms of dance.
He later took up Russian ballet dancing and it soon became his forte.
Adapting the local indigenous street drama into novel dance features
is one of the talents he is noted for. He is also a freelance journalist
and photographer for Wijaya Newspapers.
