International Scrabble Tourney from July 2 to 6

The Sri Lanka Open International scrabble competition organized and
conducted by The Sri Lanka Scrabble League and sponsored by MAS Holdings
Limited will be worked off from July 2 to 6 at the MAS Institute of
Management Technology in Thulhiriya.
Over twenty international players including the reigning World
champion Nigel Richards from New Zealand and a host of other top players
from Sri Lanka are expected to participate in this residential
tournament.
The three time Gulf champion and ranked fifth in the World
Championships Akshay Bhandarkar from the United Arab Emirates, World
Championship runner up in 2003 and 2005 Pakorn Nemitramansuk from
Thailand and the reigning national champion from India Sherwin Rodrigues
are some of the other top players competing in this tournament.

Sri Lanka will be represented by a number of local scrabble experts
including reigning all island and World Championship representative
Lakshan Wanniarachchi and former all island champion and World
Championship representative Shaila Amalean.
The Sri Lanka Scrabble League is a non profit organization that has
taken a keen interest in promoting the game of scrabble in Sri Lanka.
This game can be a useful tool to develop vocabulary and analytical
skills.
The Sri Lanka Scrabble League has been home for a number of World
class Sri Lankan scrabble players namely Naveen Fernando who was placed
third in the World Championships in 2005, Missaka Warusuwithana, Harshan
Lambadasuriya and Suresh Chinnaiyah.
In addition Sri Lanka's World Youth Championships representatives
Samitha Amarasinghe was placed eighth, Malinda Gunawardena was placed
14th and Lahiru Elvitigala was ranked 20th.
In an attempt to promote the game in the country the Sri Lanka
Scrabble League will conduct sessions every Sunday from 1.00 p.m to 6.00
p.m at the Women's International Club, No 16, Guildford Crescent,
Colombo 7.
