Candidates must declare assets
Dharma SRI ABEYRATNE
Candidates who contest for the Jaffna Municipal Council and Vavuniya
Urban Council are required to declare their assets and liabilities in
terms of the Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Law Number 1 of 1975
of the National State Assembly as amended by Act Number 29 of 1985 and
74 of 1988, Elections Commissioner Dayananda Disanayake said.
Secretaries of recognized political parties, leaders of independent
groups and prospective candidates are required to declare their assets
and liabilities.
These declarations are to be handed over to the respective Retuning
Officers at the time of handing over of nominations.
However, those who are unable to declare their assets and liabilities
at the time of handing over nominations should do so before they serve
or sit in the Councils.
Unsuccessful candidates should submit the declaration within three
months of the date of nominations.
