Opposition rights plea put off

The Supreme Court yesterday put off hearing a rights application for support filed by four opposition MPs including UNP MP Jayalath Jayawardane.

Deputy Solicitor General Demuni de Silva for the respondents moved for time to obtain instruction since she had received the documents only the day before.

Petitioners, MPs, Jayalath Jayawardane, Lakshman Senevirathne, Mangala Samaraweera, M.T. Ali Hassen and Mano Ganeshan complained to the Court that they were repeatedly refused visits to civilians in welfare centers in the North in violation of their rights. They stated that while the government ministers and foreign personals were allowed to visit the welfare centers they were restrained form visiting the camps by the respondents. The application was fixed for support for July 27.
