Financial assistance for war heroes

Steps have been taken by the Southern Provincial Council on the initiative of Chief Minister Shan Vijaya Lal de Silva to provide financial assistance to the families of war heroes who had laid down their lives in defending the nation.

A sum of Rs. 18.2 million has been allocated for this purpose from the Ranaviru fund.


Police recover body of youth

A body of a youth was found in Warellewatte, Grandpass last Friday, police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said.

T.G. Sumith Shantha (24) was found dead by police around 2.30 pm. “He was a resident of Bloemendhal area and he was killed by slashing his neck by a sharp weapon,” he added.

Meanwhile, a man was shot dead and his son sustained injuries by unidentified gunmen on Thursday night in Rajamalwatte, Modera. SSP Gunasekera said Jude Ranjith Rupas (50) was killed and his son Sampath Priyankara critically injured when two gunmen who had come in a trishaw and opened fire before they fled from the area. “The incident had occurred near a fertiliser store in Rajamalwatte around 9.00 pm,” he added.


Nine Indian fishermen released

Nine Indian fishermen, detained on the charge of straying into Sri Lankan territorial waters about one month ago, were released yesterday and were handed over to the Indian Coast Guard by the Sri Lanka Navy.

Navy Spokesman Commander D.K.P. Dassanayake told the Daily News, that the two boats captured by the Navy on the charge of breaching Maritime Boundary Lines, have been released.

The two boats carrying fishermen from Rameswaran were detained by the Navy, in the seas off Talaimannar as they were found to be fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters.

Meanwhile, the Indian media reported that a planned protest by agitating fishermen in Ramanthapuram demanding the release of their colleagues, had been called off following the news of the captured fishermen being released.


Ramanathan and Arunachalam Hall Alumni

Ramanathan and Arunachalam Hall Alumni of the University of Peradeniya is scheduled to meet jointly for their Annual Get-together for 2009 on Sunday, June 28 at Police Park Pavilion, Thimbirigasyaya, commencing 7.30 p.m. The participation of the Ramanathan Ladies Wing as always added colour and tempo and we expect to see a larger participation for this occasion.

Dinamina staffers mother dies

Mrs. P. Gamage (78) has passed away. She is the wife of former Dinamina journalist W. Gamage and mother of Dinamina Features Editor Ayanthi Withana. Her remains lie at No. 209, Swispaya, Bangalawatte, Suriyapaluwa, Kadawatha. Cremation takes place at the Enderamulla crematorium at 4 p.m. today, Monday.

Poson Bakthi Gee Saraniya, presented by the students of Sujatha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda will he held at the School Hall on June 19 (Friday) at 5 p.m.

Ratnapura donates Rs. 30m worth of food to IDPs

 

Food stuffs worth Rs. 30 million collected from the officials and employees of Divisional Secretariats and Govt. institutions in Ratnapura District and Lanka Electricity (Pvt) Co. (LECO), Colombo were donated to camps in North for the welfare of Tamil people. Here Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne handing over the consignment of goods to Rehabilitation Resettlement Minister Rishard Bathiudeen. Sabaragamuwa P.C. Deputy Chairman Ranjith Soysa, P.C. Minister Janaka Wakkumbura, G.A. Ratnapura and several others were present.
