Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake recommended to JSC

There was an unprecedented gathering of junior and senior lawyers for the ceremonial Sitting of Chief Justice Asoka de Silva.

Lawyers remarked that the first act of new Chief Justice Asoka de Silva recommending the most Senior Supreme Court Judge Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) augurs well for the judiciary.

Senior Supreme Court Judge Justice Dr. (Ms) Shirani Bandaranayake.

Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake is the most senior judge of the Supreme Court who has a written number of judgements of great significance to her credit.

Justice Dr. Bandaranayake has delivered many dissenting judgements which received plaudits from the public and the legal fraternity.

Justice Dr. Bandaranayake is the first Lady Judge to be appointed as a Supreme Court Judge and also the first Lady Judge to act for the Chief Justice in the Republic of Sri Lanka.

"Human rights are based purely on human values. A right would exist only if it is believed, accepted and advanced that such a right is linked to human values and that there is a nexus between human rights and such values. It is to be borne in mind that the first documentary use of the expression 'human rights' was used in the charter of the United Nations, which was adopted in San Francisco on June 25, 1945 and was ratified by a majority of its signatories in October that year, emphasised Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake.
