Nineteenth Year Remembrance

Major Namal Mendis of the 4th Sinha Regiment sacrificed his precious life for the country on June 13 1990 at Varipathanchena, Ampara in active combat operation.

Major Mendis became the first officer casualty of the Sri Lanka Army consequent to the commencement of Eelam War 11. Born on November 3, 1965 he was a bright student of Nalanda College who excelled in cricket, soccer and cadetting.

He joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1985 as an Officer Cadet in the 21st intake and had his initial military training in Pakistan. Served in Jaffna, Batticoloa and Ampara and fought for his motherland bravely. His patriotic service is lovingly remembered during an era the country is liberated. He was the younger brother of Sisira Mendis, DIG/CID.

A Bana ceremony was held on June 12, 2009 an alms giving will be held today, June 13, 2009.
