Petes in convincing 41-5 win retains Rev. Fr. Wiratunga Shield

St. Peter’s College produced a superb second half rally to beat their traditional rivals St. Joseph’s College by 41 points to five points in their 51st annual Battle of the Saints inter school rugby encounter worked off at Longden Pace yesterday.

The Peterites who took a close 10-5 lead at half time cut loose in the second half and went on to seal the game in their favour while collecting their points from three goals and four tries. St. Joseph’s College managed to score only a solitary try. St. Peter’s College also went on to retain the Rev. Fr. Basil Wiratunga Shield for another year. They scored twice in the second half through centre Dhanushka Ranjan and second row forward Shenal Dias before the Josephians came back into the game with a splendid try from scrum half Romelo Perera.

However St. Peter’s College completely dominated the second half as they added five more tries during a dazzling performance to complete a convincing victory. Dynamic centre Dhanushka Ranjan went over on three more occasions to complete a memorable outing.

In addition skipper Dilshan Paul and winger Lakitha Perera scored a try each with the former converting one try. Rizwan Meedin and Aneesh Fernando also converted a try each.

Dilroy Fernando refereed.
