Petes in convincing 41-5 win retains Rev. Fr. Wiratunga Shield
St. Peter’s College produced a superb second half rally to beat their
traditional rivals St. Joseph’s College by 41 points to five points in
their 51st annual Battle of the Saints inter school rugby encounter
worked off at Longden Pace yesterday.
The Peterites who took a close 10-5 lead at half time cut loose in
the second half and went on to seal the game in their favour while
collecting their points from three goals and four tries. St. Joseph’s
College managed to score only a solitary try. St. Peter’s College also
went on to retain the Rev. Fr. Basil Wiratunga Shield for another year.
They scored twice in the second half through centre Dhanushka Ranjan and
second row forward Shenal Dias before the Josephians came back into the
game with a splendid try from scrum half Romelo Perera.
However St. Peter’s College completely dominated the second half as
they added five more tries during a dazzling performance to complete a
convincing victory. Dynamic centre Dhanushka Ranjan went over on three
more occasions to complete a memorable outing.
In addition skipper Dilshan Paul and winger Lakitha Perera scored a
try each with the former converting one try. Rizwan Meedin and Aneesh
Fernando also converted a try each.
