PAC to probe public spending

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises were appointed to investigate whether public funds passed by Parliament were spent on the welfare of the public and whether these funds were managed efficiently.

Minister Anura Yapa

In addition there were other legal institutions like the Bribery Commission, Police and CID that went a step ahead to investigate whether bribery corruption of misappropriation of public funds had taken place in the public sector, Media and Information Minister Anura Priyadarashana Yapa said at the weekly Cabinet press briefing yesterday.

For the first time the COPE report was sent to the CID for investigation as the Parliamentary Committees did not take steps against any guilty parties but pointed out irregularities for further action to be taken.

The Minister was answering a question about the President's statement that bribery corruption and inefficiency should be wiped out to develop the country.
