Through these contracts under the scheme of Grant Assistance for
Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), the Government of Japan will
extend grant aid totalling US$ 1.4 million (Rs. 160 million) to DDG and
the HALO Trust (Rs. 80 million each) for humanitarian de-mining
activities in the North.
Through this grant, Japan extends its cooperation to the Government's
efforts to accelerate humanitarian de-mining activity for the early
return and resettlement of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The Japanese Government this year has already provided a grant aid of
US$ 700,000 (Rs. 80 million) for humanitarian de-mining in Mannar
through FSD (Swiss Foundation for Mine Action).
Accordingly Japan's total contribution for de-mining activities in
2009 reaches US$ 2.1 million (Rs. 240 million).
Since 2003 to date, Japan has contributed about US$ 19 million (Rs.
2,250 million) in total for mine clearance activities through INGOs as
well as for the establishment of the de-mining unit in the Ministry of
Nation Building through its GGP. |
