Fire in goods train

The engine and three oil tanks attached to a goods train running between Colombo and Anuradapura caught fire following a derailment at Thalawa last morning but no injuries and casualties were reported, railway sources said.

Commercial Superintendent of the Railway Department said a goods train transporting a consignment of oil and goods bound for Anuradapura from Colombo Fort derailed at Thalawa around 6.50 a.m. yesterday.

He said the engine was badly damaged while three oil tanks had exploded due to the fire. "We took immediate measures to unload oil from the remaining tanks to prevent the spreading of the fire," he said. Train services from Colombo to Anuradapura, were temporarily disrupted, he added.
