Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene in an interview with Asia
Tribune Colombo Correspondent Prasad Gunewardene has invited the media
to be partners in the pathway to nation’s development in the new era.

“Now it’s development time... and no room for gun culture, under
world kingpins, drug peddlers and illegally armed gangs,” he said adding
that the media need not worry as there will be no clashes between it and
law enforcement authorities.
The Minister wholeheartedly condemned the abduction and assault on
Sri Lanka Working Journalists’ Association General Secretary Poddala
Jayantha and said that the President has ordered a full investigation to
apprehend the culprits.
Questioned whether Daya Master’s claims that certain journalists were
paid by the LTTE could be substantiated or proved Minister Abeywardene
said that they have to be investigated and Daya Master should present
evidence to prove his claims.
He assured that the Government will act with much responsibility and
care on all confessions made by Daya Master.
In reply to a question whether the Government would invite those
journalists who fled the country claiming their lives were in danger to
return and guarantee their safety, the Minister said that they can now
return as they have nothing to fear. However, if someone has committed
an offence the law enforcement authorities will do their job, the
Minister added.
