Be partners in development

Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene in an interview with Asia Tribune Colombo Correspondent Prasad Gunewardene has invited the media to be partners in the pathway to nation’s development in the new era.

Minister Lakshman Yapa

“Now it’s development time... and no room for gun culture, under world kingpins, drug peddlers and illegally armed gangs,” he said adding that the media need not worry as there will be no clashes between it and law enforcement authorities.

The Minister wholeheartedly condemned the abduction and assault on Sri Lanka Working Journalists’ Association General Secretary Poddala Jayantha and said that the President has ordered a full investigation to apprehend the culprits.

Questioned whether Daya Master’s claims that certain journalists were paid by the LTTE could be substantiated or proved Minister Abeywardene said that they have to be investigated and Daya Master should present evidence to prove his claims.

He assured that the Government will act with much responsibility and care on all confessions made by Daya Master.

In reply to a question whether the Government would invite those journalists who fled the country claiming their lives were in danger to return and guarantee their safety, the Minister said that they can now return as they have nothing to fear. However, if someone has committed an offence the law enforcement authorities will do their job, the Minister added.
