Fined for tampering with price mark

A team of investigating officers attached to the Consumer Affairs Authority acting on a tip-off raided a stores complex at Mabola, Wattala belonging to a leading importer of canned fish and seized 25,000 tins of salmon in which the price tag had been arbitrarily altered contravening consumer protection laws.

They also arrested several suspects involved in the process of altering the price mark and seized a machine valued at nearly Rs. 1 million used for it.

A press release by the Consumer Affairs Authority said the officers found the price mark on 425 gm tins altered from Rs. 195 to Rs. 200 and that of 155 gm tins altered from Rs. 85 to Rs. 100 each. The suspects were produced before the Wattala Magistrate along with the seized items on May 26 and fined Rs. 100,000.
