Uva PC dissolved

The Government dissolved the Uva Provincial Council with effect from
midnight yesterday.
Uva Province Governor C. Nanda Mathew told the Daily News yesterday
that he had dissolved the Uva Provincial Council with the powers vested
with him under Article 154 of the Constitution.
He added that the relevant extraordinary Gazette notification has
been sent to the Government Printer.
The period to accept nominations will be announced by the Elections
Commissioner soon after the dissolution of the Council, Mathew said.
Official sources said the Government hopes to hold the election for
the Uva Province before August as the GCE A/Level examination will be
held during that month.
Meanwhile, according to SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithripala
Sirisena said the party had already appointed two committees to nominate
candidates for the election.
Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne has been appointed the
Chairman of the Nomination Council for the Uva Province. |
