Reggie Ranatunga never let down SLFP - President

Late Governor and Minister Reggie Ranatunga is a prominent personality who never let down the Sri Lanka Freedom Party which nurtured him. He discharged his duties at optimum level and we should protect and uplift the party for posterity, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

The President said Ranatunga was among the handful of SLFPers who decided to forcibly enter Parliament when the civic rights of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike was denied by the then Government led by President J.R. Jayawardene.

President Rajapaksa was addressing a ceremony to commemorate the late Governor and Minister Regie Ranatunga at Temple Trees yesterday. The President said Ranatunga would have been delighted, if he was alive to witness the country freed from terrorism.

President Rajapaksa reiterated that the country has only two communities - namely the people who really love the country and those who do not.

“We should be committed ourselves to rebuild the country as an undivided country and we should ensure that younger generation will not have to face the terrorism.”
