Conflict leaves 70 dead in Somalia

Kenya: Seventy people died in the capital of Somalia after violent confrontations between troops faithful to Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and the opposition.

The confrontations of the last days were the biggest, with a bigger amount of victims between the civil population and the forces in the conflict.

Ahmed condemned the violence and regarded it as promoted by elements that only know and understand, is war.

"The government is new, but it wonƒ?(tm)t be intimidated," Ahmed told to press media Monday.

Oppositors from the groups Al Shaabab and Hizbul Islam consider the new Somali President is an instrument from the western countries, and continue their struggle against the transition government.

Ahmed took office as the new Somali President on January 31, elected by the Parliament, met for several days in Djibouti.

He is the leader of the Islamic opposition group Alliance for the New Liberation of Somalia and was elected in the middle of a peace process spattered by the threatening of the Islamic guerrilla group.
