Thurstan in smashing 34-8 win over Sylvestrians

Thurstan College Colombo registered their second win for the season beating St. Sylvester’s College Kandy by 34 points (two goals, four tries) to 8 (one try, one penalty) in the Schools Under-20 Division One Segment ‘B’ match which was worked off at Longden Place yesterday.

Thurstan lads had several good games in the early stages of the tournament to gain more experience and build up their confidence levels a lot.

Even though they went down fighting to Wesley College in the opening match came back strongly to beat Science College last week.

In the early stages of the match visitors did not capitalize on keeping the ball with them and that made them pay as Thurstan drew first blood thanks to flanker Niranjana Wickramanayaka who crossed over for an unconverted try.

A few minutes later Thurstan scored again through prop forward Viduranga Weerasinghe and fly half Eranga de Costa added the extra points.

As Thurstan was leading 12 - nil at the time visitors managed to sore a well deserved try thanks to hooker Asker Hassen but the conversion was unsuccessful.

After some time St. Sylvester’s full back Wishwa Jayathilaka put over a penalty to reduce the lead further to 12 - 8. But they could not hold the opponents for a long time as scrum half Anjana Chamikara scored for Thurstan and Eranga de Costa was successful with the conversion.

Just before the short whistle the home team managed to score an unconverted try through prop forward Hafiz Adahan to increase the lead to 24 - 8.

After the lemons both teams did not perform to their potential but the home team managed to score twice in the second half to extend their lead further, through number eight Jayasanka Perera and also scrum half Anjana Chamikara who scored for the second time to give the home side victory by 34 points to 8 at the long whistle.
