Grievances of pavement hawkers - a misrepresentation

The so-called grievances aired by pavement hawkers over the removal
of their unauthorized structures in Pettah is a misrepresentation, a
Senior Urban Development Authority (UDA) official told the Daily News.
The Official also added that the removal was legal and done only after
conducting a series of discussions with them and providing alternate
accommodation at a refurbished building complex at Saunder's Place in
Pettah.
The UDA is very keen about clearing the pavement for pedestrians who
flock to the Central Bus Stand. Constructions on pavements blocking the
path of pedestrians is a big problem and it is a security threat too,
officials said.
"Certain anti-social activities including drug peddling and
prostitution too had been going on in these makeshift sheds posing a
hindrance to city dwellers and those who visit the city for various
matters, the official added. He said the attitude of the people must
change. They should learn to purchase their needs from established sales
outlets rather than from pavements as these purchases are usually more
hygienic, of better quality and of the correct weight.
Hundred and seven unauthorized temporary commercial constructions
were removed two weeks ago by the UDA with police assistance.
