Outstation schools dominate

Mobitel Relay Carnival 2009:

Seven meet records were powered on the final day of the Relay Carnival 2009 at Sugathadasa stadium yesterday. Meanwhile it was the outstations schools that came to the limelight winning most of the prestigious awards on offer.

Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa won the Mobitel Challenge Cup when they collected 139 points in the boys section while Ratnayake Central College, Menikhinna carried away the girls championship with a total of 119 points.

In the open events, Sri Lanka Air Force women with 54 points went away with the R. A. Siripala Challenge Trophy while Sri Lanka Army ‘A’ team with 60 points were awarded the Lakshman de Alwis Trophy.

The first record for the day was achieved by the quartet from A. Ratnayake Central College, Menikhinna clocking 8:20.8 secs for the 4 x 800m event. The earlier record too was under their belt which was set in 2007 (2:24.59 secs).

The second was set by St. Joseph’s Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle when they clocked 50.21 secs in the girls under-20, 4x400m event. St. Joseph’s BV’s under-16 quartet too set a new record for the medley relay, timing 2:24.44.

Holy Family Convent was the only girls school from Colombo to establish a new record when they clocked 28.21 secs for the girls u-14 relay. The other Colombo girls school to win an event was Ladies College.

A. Ratnayake Central College had a another success when they clocked a time of 3:28.32 secs to win the 4x400m relay setting a new record. Girls from the same school lowered the record clocking 4:04.30 secs for the u-20 age group.

Sri Lanka Army’s middle distance runners got their act together to establish a new meet record for the 4x1500m event when they completed the event with a time of 16:20.35 secs.

Nayomika Gimhani from Sumana Balika Vidyalaya Ratnapura who collected 3,544 points in the women’s heptathlon was awarded the Anil Weerasinghe Trophy. Runners-up in this event were G. A. Ishara Sandeepani (3,188 points) and D. H. Disala Weerasekera (2,672 points) from Ferguson High School, Ratnapura.

M. S. M. Naleen St. Joseph’s Trincomalee carried away the trophy for the men’s heptathlon when he collected 5,172. Runners-up to him was N. H. E. C. R. Seneviratne (5013) - Joseph Vaz and Reshan Saputhanthri (4726) - Ananda College, Colombo.
