Prisoners add colour to Vesak

Welikada Prison Officers Association in association with the prison inmates has drawn up an elaborate program to commemorate Vesak this year.

Under this program, a colourful pandal depicting the Thilamutti Jataka story, will be exhibited opposite the prison.

Prison Superintendent W. M. R. B. Wickramasinghe said donations received during the exhibition of last year's Vesak lantern and personal contributions made by inmates by foregoing several meals were utilised for the construction of the pandal.

Former Commissioner General Maj Gen Vajira Abeygunawardena and the present acting Commissioner General Nishantha Dhanasinghe offered guidance towards the program. Apart from this a replica of the Kandy Sri Dalada Maligawa made by prison inmates using ekels will be displayed at the Vesak lantern competition at the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya.

There will also be a vesak Bhakti Gee recital opposite the prison premises and a rice dansala for Vesak sightseers coming to view the pandal during Vesak.
