Chinese Ambassador Yang Ziuping yesterday met Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka at the Army Headquarters. Lt Gen. Sarath Fonseka briefed her on the status quo in relation to the final phase of the humanitarian rescue operation and measures that have been in place in the 'No Fire Zone' for receipt of them. The Ambassador also received a comprehensive account on the recent exodus of entrapped civilians into the cleared areas through multimedia and how they were smoothly directed to government-managed welfare centres afterwards.

The Commander also acknowledged the assistance and cooperation, extended to Sri Lanka by the Chinese people in the past several decades. Both exchanged mementos as recognition of their goodwill.
