Mujica, Lacalle lead vote in Uruguay
Uruguay: Former Tupamaro guerrilla Jose Mujica and ex President Luis
Alberto Lacalle (1990-1995) are leading party vote intention in their
bid for presidential nomination in Uruguay.
According to a survey by Factum pollster, Mujica is supported by
46-49 percent of his Frente Amplio (Broad Front-FA) party. Senator
Danilo Astori has a 36-38 percent support, and current mayor of
Canelones, Marcos Carambula, 12-13 percent.
Lacalle, who is seeking the conservative National Party-Whites (PN-B)
presidential nomination, has a 48-52 percent, followed by Jorge
Larranaga (44-47 percent).Within the Red Party, senator Pedro Bordaberry
is leading polls with 67-71 percent, ahead of former Vice President Luis
Hierro Lopez (20-26 percent).
However, people’s support for the Red Party is currently at a record
low, with all pollsters indicating that FA and PN candidates have the
best chances to win the Oct. 25 presidential elections. Party primaries
will be held on June 28.
Political analysts consider that if Mujica and Lacalle eventually win
their presidential bids, elections will be increasingly polarized.-
