Criminal shot dead

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said an underworld leader was shot dead by police in self defence in Minuwangoda yesterday morning.

W. M. Naleen Kumara alias Naliya involved in many criminal activities and who was under Minuwangoda police custody escaped on March 29.

Kumara was rearrested on Sunday by the police,” SSP Gunasekera told the Daily News. During inquiries, he divulged information of whereabouts of weapons hidden by him used for crime activities.

A police team from Minuwangoda escorted Kumara’s hideout near Opatha Sanasa Lake around 7.30 a.m.

A pistol, two magazines and a hand grenade were found from the spot. “When the suspect attempted to hurl a hand grenade, in the police escort shot him in self defence,” he added.
