The UPFA said yesterday that some of their top performers at the
recently concluded Western Provincial Council (WPC) elections were not
considered for key posts in the WPC as they had voiced their desire to
contest a future General Election.
SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena said the Party
had taken a decision not to nominate any person who holds a key position
in the Provincial Council as a prospect at a future General Election.
Addressing the gathering at the Presidential Secretariat where the
swearing in ceremony took place, the Minister said the decision was
arrived at by the Party hierarchy to ensure unhindered continuity of
work at the WPC.
While attributing the victory as a personal triumph of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Minister said that the result had portrayed the
confidence the masses had placed on the President and the present
regime.
“Thus the newly elected should realise that the victory was a
collective effort and that the Party and country should come ahead of
positions and perks,” he added.
The Minister addressing all newly elected members of the UPFA urged
them to work as one to propel the Western Province to greater heights. |
