The Transport Ministry on the instructions of Transport Minister
Dullas Alahapperuma has taken measures to provide a new alternative
business location (London Market) for pavement vendors who are forced to
occupy the area close to the Central Bus Stand in Pettah.
A Spokesman from the Transport Ministry told the Daily News that this
new site has been constructed close to the People's Park Bus Stand in
Gunasinghapura, Pettah by the Urban Development Authority at a cost of
Rs.35 million.
He said the London Market has all facilities for small-time vendors
to engage in their business conveniently in a very safe and clean
environment. "They will also be provided with maximum security," he
said.
The Police on Sunday removed 107 unauthorized commercial
constructions close to the Central Bus Stand in Pettah due to security
concerns and these vendors will be provided with business premises in
this London Market," he said.
The decision to remove unauthorized constructions has been taken in
response to requests from the pedestrians. Pedestrians have extended
their gratitude to the Government for its bold decision," he said.
Pedestrians are often forced to walk on the road because of shops and
structures set up by vendors encroaching on pavements. Better road
utilization and the prevention of accidents are the two other reasons
for clearing unauthorized pavement structures. Another important
consideration is the aesthetic aspect - city beautification.
The Central Bus Stand which belongs to the Sri Lanka Transport Board
is currently being reconstructed at a cost of Rs.50 million.
The initial reconstruction work has already been completed under the
first stage," he said.
The Central Bus Stand will be renovated to a clean and efficient
place fulfilling the transport needs of commuters coming from all parts
of the country. He said that commuters are expected to be provided with
a comfortable and efficient passenger transport service through this
renovation project," he said. |
