Russo's chef wins pastry competition

The executive pastry chef at Russo's on the Bay in Howard Beach, Ajith Saputhanthri, was declared the winner of Paris Gourmet's 20th Annual U.S. Pastry Competition, part of the International Restaurant and Food Service Show in New York City.

Saputhanthri was born in Sri Lanka and studied at a culinary school in Sri Lanka before moving to Lucien, Switzerland to pursue his career. He travelled throughout the Middle East, working in a number of five-star hotels and, eventually, as the executive pastry chef for Carnival Cruise Lines. In 1993, Saputhanthri moved to New York and worked at a number of well-known pastry shops and cafes before joining Russo's on the Bay as the executive pastry chef in 2008.
