Neonatal ICU at Nawaloka Hospitals

Nawaloka Hospital PLC opened their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in their new hospital complex recently. It was opened by the Chairman Nawaloka Hospital PLC, H.K. Dharmadasa in the presence of eminent Consultant Paediatricians, Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Nawaloka Hospital’s Neonatal ICU was built and is fully equipped with all modern facilities for the emergency care of premature and term babies, while highly qualified, trained and experienced medical officers and nursing staff are on hand to manage any post surgical neonatal babies.

“Nawaloka Hospital is now in a unique position to provide care for such babies. At the NICU we have 12 equipped beds with ventilator facilities and a one to one nurse to bed ratio” said Director/General Manager Nawaloka Hospitals, Prof. Lal Chandrasena.

Also housed on this same floor is the Obstetric and Gynaecology ward with two separate operating theatres, dedicated for the services of maternity patients, so that attention and care would be even more prompt and easy. In keep with modern trends, a private delivery room facility is available in order that husbands could be with their wives and witness the delivery procedure.

Amongst the facilities available are Ventilators to care for extremely premature children (800 grammes), as well as 27 weeks to term and very ill babies. Bili blankets (phototherapy) for Neo Natal Jaundice affected babies (yellowish discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes) caused by excess bilirubin, a by product as a result of the destruction of red blood cells in the liver are also available. “The baby can be wrapped with this blanket to give ultraviolet phototherapy so as to reduce the bilirubin levels” said Professor Chandrasena.

Facilities to transport babies from other hospitals or from any part of the country to Nawaloka Hospital’s Neo Natal ICU via our ambulances which are equipped with well trained doctors and nurses are also available,” said Professor Chandrasena.
